The Voice of Our Children: What do you want the world to look like when you grow up?
At this year's event, children sent their messages of hope for the future of our Earth.
When visiting our cool unique recycled milk bottle conversation booth, children were asked to What do you want the world to look like when you grow up? Children sent their messages into the universe by verbalising their responses into a cool large fake microphone made from recycled materials. Some of their responses... "Green trees and green grass" Boyd, Age 5 "I want the world to be beautiful, green. I want no plastics and our world healthy". "I want the earth to be clean and I want my generation to be nice & smart about looking after the world." Connor, Age 10. "I don't want the Earth to be too hot or too cold. I don't want rubbish on the seas so they don't pollute the world". William C, Age 7 |
The Milk Bottle Conversation Booth
Made from over 540 plastic milk bottles (both 2 & 3 litre bottles), the conversation booth was built by 4 volunteers over a period of 3-4 weeks at our centre. It took over 3 months to collect the milk bottles from members of the community. Once built, we transported the booth in a caged trailer to the Tondoon Botanic Gardens for Ecofest. We were very happy to see it hold together!! Special thanks goes to: * Training with Tracey and her exercise clients for helping with the collection; * Aurecon for providing volunteers to assist with the roof construction; * Irene Dudley for embracing the idea, constructing the walls and persisting with the task! The booth has since been donated to Rainbow Valley Early Learning Centre, a unique addition to its play space for young children. |
MILK BOTTLE FACTS
Did you know that Australia produces over 30,000 tonnes of milk bottles per year? That's equivalent to 750 million 2L bottles!!
Plastic milk bottles are easily recycled through your YELLOW kerbside bin and are turned into new products such as wheelie bins, plastic furniture, agricultural pipes and plastic pallets.
What about the lids?
Unfortunately the plastic lids can’t be collected through your kerbside recycling system as they are too small to be accurately sorted at the Materials Recycling Facility. They can jam up the sorting machinery and contaminate the other recyclables.

Children’s Earth Art Activity
Using recycled cardboard and salad spinners, children were invited to decorate their own Earth.
Leading from the conversation booth, children were asked to scribe their response to the question “What do you want the world to look like when you grow up?” on the back of recycled cardboard circles. Using recycled salad spinners, children decorated the earth with paint. Recycled ribbons were available to tie to their painted earth for hanging.
Children were able to take their creation home as a reminder of their vision and hope for Only One Earth.

Recycled Musical Instruments
Our beautiful recycled musical instruments were a 'hit' again at Ecofest this year. Young and old enjoy making music on these unique pieces! |
Ugly Mugs
Coffee drinkers were able to purchase a mug for a gold coin donation and save waste when getting a coffee at Ecofest. Thank you to Mrs Ownsy's Retro Cafe for supporting this initiative. |
Thank you to our wonderful team of volunteers who assisted, not only at the event itself but with activity preparations, set up and pack up.
